A synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that produces vocal audio signals.

An Analog synthesizer uses analog signals to generate sound electronically. It uses a voltage-controlled oscillator through subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis, and frequency modulation synthesis.

The earliest analog synths such as Trautonium were produced between 1920 and 1930 and came with some distinct features:

  1. Thermionic valve and electro. Mechanical technologies which synthesize bass sound. To date, it is still sought after to simulate the same effects.
  2. Sound mixers. The synthesizers had effect devices, including reverb units such as sequencers, to mix sounds and bring on the intended blend.

  3. Low costs – Since these are traditional synths that are not so advanced and since they are no longer popular, there are low entry costs, especially when buying them and maintenance costs.
  4. Holds its value more than a software synth – In the long term, this system will last longer and hold more value, especially if you buy the older analog hardware synth. Its production emphasized more on quality than on quantity and as such price was carefully considered.

Notable to these analog synths is that after 1960 they were improved to use operational amplifier integrated circuits and potentiometers for sound adjustment. They could now change its sound using low-pass as well as high pass filters.

Later on, the synths would be upgraded into single units to eliminate patch cords and integrated signal routing systems and stopped using the patch cables to connect the modules. What is Digital Synth?

The synth uses modern signal processing techniques to produce sounds of the music. The introduction of computers back in the 70’s enhanced the practicability of production of sound synthesis.

With its system, it creates a line of numbers that produces sounds from speakers. At Stanford University, John Chowning experimented with the frequency modulation synthesis in 1971, and soon after, Yamaha’s engineers adapted his ideas to produce digital synthesizers.

However, they improved on ‘key scaling’ to eliminate the diversion of sounds that were realized during frequency modulations under analog systems.

The very first commercial digital synth was launched in 1979, namely the Casio VL-1, and sold high.

Yamaha followed in the line of industrial production and released its first synthesizer in 1980, namely, GS-1. These digital synths came with distinct features that gave them an added advantage to the analog synths. The features included:

  1. Hardware features consist of Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) that produces the squeak excitation. By nature, the waveforms are a different shape and sound better. Many people prefer hardware synth features and enjoy better music composed.
